2012 Release 5 Island Tourism

The tourism sector has been one of the most important industries in many island communities for decades. Islands have seen some highs and lows in activity levels and revenue generation as a result of world economic conditions at the time, natural disasters (e.g. hurricanes), and acts of terrorism (September 11, the Bali bomb attacks, etc.). All these have an impact on tourism infrastructure, inward investment, and government funding (e.g. marketing).

Apart from examining tourism statistics such as visitor numbers, room occupancy and length of stay. Government strategies relating to the sector are examined together with the policies that are in place to attract inward investment. The sector’s size and value to each island’s economy in terms of contribution to GDP and numbers employed are also considered.
